Are All Express Entry Draws the Same?
No. Nowadays, Canada conducts targeted draws to invite specific types of candidates that the country needs.
Program-Specific Draws
IRCC used to conduct program-specific draws for candidates who qualified under one of the three federal immigration programs,
namely the CEC, FSWP, and FSTP. However, since the Canadian government announced its intention to prioritize candidates who are
already working or studying in Canada, IRCC has conducted program-specific draws only for Canadian Experience Class candidates.
The most recent Federal Skilled Trades Program draw was held in 2020, while the last Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP) draw
took place in 2023. So, if you are eligible only for one of these two programs, you may end up waiting in the pool without a
definite timeline for an ITA regardless of your CRS score.
Category-Based Express Entry Draws
Category-based selection has made Express Entry considerably more strategic.
Rather than selecting candidates solely because they have among the highest scores in the overall pool, Canada uses this
category-based selection mechanism to target people with the skills or backgrounds that match specific economic objectives.
Current categories include areas such as French-language proficiency, healthcare and social services, STEM, skilled trades,
education and transportation, along with certain occupations with at least one year of Canadian experience.
This creates an important lesson for prospective immigrants:
A CRS score should never be considered in isolation.
Your occupation, language abilities, work experience and eligibility for particular categories may affect your opportunities
within Express Entry. The CRS cut-off points vary widely across different categories.
