Express Entry Draws in Canada: Why Your CRS Score Is Only Part of the Story

Express Entry Draws in Canada: Why Your CRS Score Is Only Part of the Story

For anyone hoping to become a Canadian permanent resident through Express Entry, few moments create as much anticipation as an Express Entry draw. Candidates may watch Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada announcements closely, compare Comprehensive Ranking System scores, and wonder whether the next round could finally bring an Invitation to Apply. Canada's immigration selection system has become increasingly strategic, with different types of invitation rounds targeting different programs, skills and labour-market needs. For candidates in Toronto, Markham and across Ontario, understanding which draw you may qualify for can sometimes be just as important as knowing your CRS score.

At Hopeway Immigration, Anne Lui, a Regulated Canadian Immigration Consultant (RCIC-IRB), regularly advises clients that Express Entry success depends not only on maximizing CRS points, but also on identifying the most suitable immigration pathway and preparing a well-supported application before an ITA is issued. Understanding how Express Entry draws work is often the first step in developing an effective immigration strategy.

What Is an Express Entry Draw?

What Is an Express Entry Draw?

Express Entry is Canada's online application management system for three federal economic immigration programs:

Canadian Experience Class (CEC) — generally intended for eligible skilled workers with qualifying Canadian work experience.

Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP) — designed for qualifying skilled workers with foreign work experience.

Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP) — intended for eligible workers in skilled trades.

Eligible candidates create an Express Entry profile and enter a pool. Each candidate is then ranked according to their Comprehensive Ranking System score, or CRS score.

IRCC then holds regular draws and sends invitations to qualifying candidates to apply for permanent residence.
This invitation is commonly called an ITA — Invitation to Apply.

Are All Express Entry Draws the Same?

No. Nowadays, Canada conducts targeted draws to invite specific types of candidates that the country needs.

Program-Specific Draws

IRCC used to conduct program-specific draws for candidates who qualified under one of the three federal immigration programs, namely the CEC, FSWP, and FSTP. However, since the Canadian government announced its intention to prioritize candidates who are already working or studying in Canada, IRCC has conducted program-specific draws only for Canadian Experience Class candidates.

The most recent Federal Skilled Trades Program draw was held in 2020, while the last Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP) draw took place in 2023. So, if you are eligible only for one of these two programs, you may end up waiting in the pool without a definite timeline for an ITA regardless of your CRS score.

Category-Based Express Entry Draws

Category-based selection has made Express Entry considerably more strategic.

Rather than selecting candidates solely because they have among the highest scores in the overall pool, Canada uses this category-based selection mechanism to target people with the skills or backgrounds that match specific economic objectives.

Current categories include areas such as French-language proficiency, healthcare and social services, STEM, skilled trades, education and transportation, along with certain occupations with at least one year of Canadian experience.

This creates an important lesson for prospective immigrants:

A CRS score should never be considered in isolation.

Your occupation, language abilities, work experience and eligibility for particular categories may affect your opportunities within Express Entry. The CRS cut-off points vary widely across different categories.

What Does the CRS Score Measure?

The Comprehensive Ranking System evaluates numerous factors associated with a candidate's ability to establish economically in Canada.

These can include:

  • Age
  • Education
  • English and/or French proficiency
  • Canadian work experience
  • Foreign work experience
  • Spouse or common-law partner factors
  • Skill-transferability combinations
  • Canadian education
  • Provincial nomination
  • Certain additional factors

Candidates can receive a CRS score of up to 1,200 points.

A provincial nomination remains the most significant boost factor because qualifying nomination under an Express Entry-aligned provincial pathway can provide 600 additional CRS points.

What Does the CRS Score Measure?

An Important Change: Job Offers No Longer Add CRS Points

This is one area where older online immigration information can quickly become misleading.

As of March 25, 2025, IRCC removed additional CRS points previously awarded for qualifying job offers.

That means candidates should not assume that obtaining a LMIA-based job offer will automatically add the 50 or 200 CRS points that were available under the previous system.

This demonstrates why relying on outdated Express Entry articles, videos or forum discussions can be risky.

What Happens After an Express Entry Draw?

Receiving an ITA is exciting, but it is not the same thing as receiving permanent residence.

After an invitation, the candidate must submit a complete permanent residence application and supporting documentation within the deadline established by IRCC.

Documentation may include:

  • Identity and travel documents
  • Language test results
  • Educational documentation
  • Employment records
  • Police certificates
  • Medical information
  • Proof of funds when applicable
  • Documents supporting information claimed in the Express Entry profile

IRCC can verify whether the information used to obtain the invitation is accurate. For that reason, candidates should resist the temptation to treat the Express Entry profile as a rough estimate. Information concerning employment, education, marital status, language results and other factors must be carefully entered and supported.

Should You Enter the Pool Before Your Score Is "Perfect"?

Should You Enter the Pool Before Your Score Is Perfect?

There is no single answer that applies to everybody.

Waiting indefinitely for a particular CRS number can be problematic because Express Entry draws pattern may change anytime. Eligibility categories can also evolve as Canada's immigration and labour-market priorities change.

For some eligible candidates, entering the pool and developing a strategy to strengthen their profile may make more sense than trying to predict the next cut-off.

Possible strategies to increase their CRS points could include improving official-language scores, obtaining additional qualifying work experience, exploring French-language opportunities, reviewing provincial nomination options or correcting overlooked CRS factors.

The important word is strategy.

How Hopeway Immigration Can Help

At Hopeway Immigration, Express Entry support begins with understanding the individual rather than simply entering numbers into a calculator.

  • Whether you are eligible for Express Entry
  • Which federal program may apply

  • Your current CRS score
  • Category-based selection opportunities

  • Documentation that could become important following an ITA

The Next Draw Is Only One Moment in a Bigger Plan

Watching Canada Express Entry draws can be useful, but immigration planning should not become a weekly exercise in hoping that one number falls.

A strong Express Entry strategy asks a better question:

Where does my profile fit within Canada's current immigration policies, and what realistic steps could make it stronger?

For skilled workers hoping to build a future in Toronto, Markham, Ontario or elsewhere in Canada, an Express Entry draw can represent an extraordinary opportunity. Preparing for that opportunity before your invitation arrives can make the path forward much clearer.

At Hopeway Immigration, the goal is to help candidates replace uncertainty with information, preparation and a realistic immigration strategy — because behind every CRS score is a person planning a new chapter in Canada.
